Summary
The aim of the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Exercise and Physical Activity for Children) (RQF) is to provide learners with the knowledge, understanding, and skills required to work with children at different developmental stages to improve fitness. The qualification will provide learners with the ability to develop and deliver effective sessions in a safe environment to support the stages of a child and young person’s development. This course is for those who are already Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualified.
To successfully achieve the Level 2 Award in Delivering Physical Activity and Sport to Children and Young People learners must complete one mandatory unit to achieve 4 credits.
This qualification begins with a home study and guided learning programme so candidates can begin as soon as is convenient. The course is a full distance learning course. There is no face-to-face contact for distance learners and this is replaced by DVD submission of practical assessment. Candidates can opt for an intensive course for 6 weeks or a longer duration course to suit individual circumstances.
Dates and Duration
The total duration is a minimum of 3 weeks and up to a maximum of one year. The total number of guided learning hours is 35 so you will be involved in guided learning for between 2 to 16 hours per week depending on the chosen duration of your course (ie between 3 weeks and 6 weeks).
Entry Requirement
Level 2 Award in Delivering Physical Activity and Sport to Children and Young People – Learners must hold either a:
- Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing.
- Learners must have completed safeguarding training* prior to commencing the qualification. *please contact HFI for further details of how to complete this training.

Occupational Description
Once completed, learners will only be able to deliver activities to children within their area of expertise, for example, gym-based exercise (gym instructors or personal trainers), group training (group trainers or exercise-to-music instructors), coaching of a specific sport (sport specific coach), multi-sports or physical activity (physical activity leader or multi-sports coach).
