Level 2/3 Specialist Modules for Personal Trainers
In the UK, we have Level 2 Fitness (Gym) Instructor Certificate and Level 3 Personal Trainer Certificate qualifications. When taken both together you receive the Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training. Whether you ultimately receive the Level 3 PT ‘Certificate’ (which means you took them separately) or ‘Diploma’ (which means you took them together) you have the same qualification.
The UK also have Level 4 qualifications. These are one-topic specialist qualifications for those wanting to take on ‘special populations’ clients (with differing medical backgrounds). These are accessed by completing the Level 2 Fitness (Gym) Instructor qualification plus the Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral qualification. At HFI, we highly recommended that you take the Level 3 Personal Trainer before the Level 3 Exercise Referral as it helps you understand about progressive training which is not covered in the Level 2 Gym.
Of course, ACSM Certified Personal Trainer is always an alternative option, to demonstrate that you are always up-to-date with the proper science and have greater understanding of the personal training craft. ACSM CPT also covers the special populations content.
