Summary
The Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma is for anyone who already has (Level 2 Gym) or, ideally, (Level 3 PT) . The Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma opens up many doors for you as a practitioner who can accept GP Referrals in your local area. You will also be eligible to take any Level 4 qualification. You will learn how to safely train clients with any of the many conditions affecting people.
The Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma course begins with a home study and guided learning programme, so candidates can begin as soon as is convenient. This is a distance learning course. There is no face-to-face contact we use filmed submission of practical assessment. Candidates can opt for an intensive course for 6 weeks or a longer duration course to suit individual circumstances.
Dates and Duration
The Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma is a distance learning qualification. The total duration is a minimum of 6 weeks and up to a maximum of one year. The total number of guided learning hours is 242 so you will be involved in guided learning for between 10 to 40 hours per week depending on the chosen duration of your course (ie between 6 weeks and one year).
Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma – Entry Requirement
Learners must hold either a:
- Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym/ Exercise to Music or Aqua) or equivalent (including qualifications which give entry to the REPs Physical activity Advisor category) or
- Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
- Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork or ETM
- Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga.
It is highly recommended that Level 2 candidate also have gained relevant work experience prior to taking this qualification.

- Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers who wish to design and implement programmes of exercise for referred patients.
Course Format
Full distance learning format
- Full home study course.
- 6-week simulated client case study and filmed practical assessment.
Location (for face-to-face days, if applicable)
There is only practical face-to-face attendance required for this course (if filming is not an option).
Syllabus and Assessments’ Format
This qualification comprises six mandatory units.
- *Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health (*already completed with Level 3 PT if you already have this qualification).
- Professional Practice for Exercise Referral Instructors – Extended Worksheet.
- Understanding Medical Conditions for Exercise Referral – Extended Worksheet.
- *Applying the principles of nutrition and physical activity (*already completed with Level 3 PT if you already have this qualification)
- Planning Exercise Referral Programmes with Patients – Extended Worksheet.
- Instructing Exercise with Referred Patients – Assignment.
Successful achievement of all six mandatory units, 38 credits must be achieved for the full qualification.
Aim and Objectives
Aim:
This qualification is designed to provide learners with the knowledge to ensure safe and effective exercise programming for patients with a number of medical conditions and common reasons for referral onto a community-based exercise referral scheme.
Objectives:
- To enable learners to design and agree a safe and effective programme for patients with a range of common referral conditions.
- To enable learners to deliver, review and adapt a programme for patients with a range of common referral conditions.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
This syllabus does not qualify learners to prescribe an exercise programme for a patient entering PhaseIV Cardiac Rehabilitation.
