Details

The ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) conducts pre-participation health screening, maximal and sub-maximal graded exercise tests, and performs strength, flexibility and body composition tests for patients and clients challenged with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic diseases and disorders, as well as with apparently healthy populations.

This qualification compliments a clinical exercise masters degree. ACSM CEP also provides global recognition as a clinical exercise specialist.

This course is for university graduate candidates who have or can obtain the relevant clinical work experience and are:

-        Are UK-based and and need a higher or an international recognised qualification.

-        Are looking to work internationally in a clinical exercise programme.

ACSM CEP course begins with home study and an optional live online guided learning programme so candidates can begin as soon as is applicable. The assessment requires one attendance date at an exam centre for the final 3.5 hour computer-based assessment. Assessment centres are located throughout the UK (and the world) and are open Monday-Saturday (and some Sundays) in most locations.

  • Basic Life Support Certificate or CPR Professional Rescuer

*The academic eligibility requirement to take the CEP exam is a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in exercise science, or equivalent (candidates are eligible to take the examination in the last semester of their degree program).
An equivalent major refers to the completion of a degree which includes, at minimum, the following:
A minimum of 21 semester or 28 quarter hours of exercise science courses that clearly identifies the following content:

• Applied Kinesiology or Biomechanics

• Exercise Testing and Prescription (course[s] should include exercise testing and prescription for healthy populations and special considerations such as children, older adults, pregnancy, diseased populations, etc.)
• Special populations (course[s] should include pathophysiology on a range of conditions, including CVD, pulmonary, metabolic, older adults, pregnancy, etc.)
• Health Risk Appraisal (course[s] should include information on risk stratification or classification given a variety of health conditions.)

**Practical experience in a clinical exercise program must be in:

  • cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation programs
  • exercise testing
  • exercise prescription
  • electrocardiography
  • patient education and counselling
  • disease management of cardiac, pulmonary, and metabolic diseases
  • emergency management

Only hours associated with the following in which you assisted or played a direct role in providing services will be accepted:
