This package combines the Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Trainer with the the Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma. This combination gives candidates who are starting out additional recognition as a more highly qualified personal trainer who is able work with clients with many health conditions. Exercise Referral personal trainers are also able to work for Exercise Referral (GP) Referral Schemes. On completion candidates will also be eligible for any of the Level 4 modules. The Exercise Referral Personal Trainer Package includes the following certificates: - Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training (QCF) - Active IQ Level 3 Exercise Referral Diploma (QCF) - HFI Exercise Referral Personal Trainer Certificate On completion candidates receive the individual qualification certificates and also the HFI Exercise Referral Personal Trainer Certificate.

This carefully chosen combination of qualifications provides access to full registration with the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as a Level 3 Personal Trainer and as an Exercise Referral specialist in the REPs Exercise Referral category.

Candidates begin with the Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training and then move onto the Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral. The intensive time scale is 18 weeks total but candidates can also complete the two qualifications more slowly within up to one year.

Both qualifications are offered in the blended learning or full distance learning formats.  The blended learning format means candidates need to attend face-to face practical workshop days and assessments. There is no face-to-face contact for distance learners and this is replaced by DVD submission for the practical assessments.

Entry Requirements

• Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended
• The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary
• There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have basic skills in communication pitched at level 2

Target Learners:

• Adults (aged 16+) wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector as gym-based fitness instructors and personal trainers
• Please note that 16 to 18 year-olds may need to be supervised in the workplace, once they have achieved the qualification

i) Blended learning format
-        Full online elearning course for the Level 3 Exercise Referral course part
-        Home study course for Level 3 PT Diploma
-        Live internet-based individual tutorials throughout
-        4 individual face-to-face days - one for level 2 training, one for level 2 assessment, one for level 3 training and one for level 3 assessment (select dates from of our           monthly practical workshop and assessment dates)
-        1 hour practical assessment for Level 3 Exercise Referral (select one of our monthly assessment dates)

ii) Full distance learning format
-        Full online elearning for the Level 3 Exercise Referral Course
-        Home study course for Level 3 PT Diploma
-        6 week role play client case study
-        Live internet-based individual tutorials
-        DVD submitted practical assessment (date to suit candidate)

Location of Training and Assessments

For those who choose to attend face-to-face the location is London Metropolitan University at 166-220 Holloway Rd, London N7 8DB. It is 2 minutes walk from Holloway Road tube station which is on the Piccadilly Line. 

Qualification Structure

This qualification comprises of  16 mandatory units (6 for Level 2; 4 for Level 3 and 6 for the Level 3 Exercise Referral):
Level 2 Gym Units:
Unit 1 - Anatomy and physiology for exercise
Unit 2 - Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
Unit 3 - Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
Unit 4 - Principles of exercise, fitness and health
Unit 5 - Planning gym-based exercise
Unit 6 - Instructing gym-based exercise

Level 3 Personal Trainer Units:
Unit 1 – Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
Unit 2 – Applying the principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme
Unit 3 – Programming personal training with clients
Unit 4 – Delivering personal training sessions
Successful achievement of all seven units must be achieved for the full qualification.

Level 3 Exercise Referral Units
This qualification comprises six mandatory units.
The following six units, 38 credits must be completed for the full qualification:
*1. Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health (*already completed with Level 3 PT)
2. Professional Practice for Exercise Referral Instructors
3. Understanding Medical Conditions for Exercise Referral
*4. Applying the principles of nutrition and physical activity (*already completed with Level 3 PT)
5. Planning Exercise Referral Programmes with Patients
6. Instructing Exercise with Referred Patients
Successful achievement of all six mandatory units, 38 credits must be achieved for the full qualification.

Progression

This qualification also provides progression to the:
• Active IQ Level 4 Certificate in Exercise for the Management of Lower Back Pain (QCF)
• Active IQ Level 4 Certificate in Exercise and Nutritional Interventions for Obesity and Diabetes (QCF)
