Level 4 Exercise Management for the Management of Low Back Pain
Introduction
The Active IQ Certificate in Exercise for The Management of Low Back Pain is at Level 4 on the on the National Qualifications Framework. This qualification will allow access to Level 4 on REPs.
Candidates will train to a professionally competent level, enabling them to prescribe, plan, conduct and review programmes to address the needs of patients/clients with low back pain.
Entry requirements - candidates must hold:
Level 3 qualified fitness instructor or personal trainer and exercise referral.
From September instructors will need to hold a certificate in exercise referral plus a level 4 specialism access to Level 4 REPs. Those who have gained a level 4 qualification prior to Sept 2011 don’t require the level 3 referral qualification.

Unit 1 – The Principles of Progressive Exercise Programming for Clients with Low Back Pain
Unit 2 – Progressive Exercise Programming for Clients with Low Back Pain
Course Content
- Underpinning knowledge and functional anatomy - including: the influence of exercise/activity/inactivity, a classification of low back pain and the psychosocial components of low back pain
- Exercise referral processes and communication skills – including: understanding the referral process, relevant medico-legal requirements, understanding scope of practice and communicating skills
- Assessment and screening – including: identifying referrals; precautions and contraindications, psychosocial assessment and functional/physical assessment
- Programme design – including: progressive programme design considerations; providing psychosocial support, establishing and monitoring exercise quotas and intensity
Course Tutor - Dean Payne
Dean is a Chartered Physiotherapist and Strength and Conditioning Specialist with extensive knowledge of Sport Specific Rehabilitation. He is a university lecturer and PhD researcher in Sport Specific Rehabilitation and injury prevention.

Internally assessed back pain case study (handed in on or before assessment day)
