Course Content
Motivation Interviewing training for Instructors and Personal Trainers
This 2-day intensive workshop presents a range of evidence-based motivational interviewing and consultation techniques, which will enable you or your instructors to work effectively with clients and potential clients. This workshop provides a format and develops advanced skills to use during all pre-sign up consultations, gym floor contacts, one-to-one exercise sessions, initial consultations, and follow-up consultations. The skills are adapted for work with even the most resistant or demotivated clients and from gym novice to regulars and athletic populations.

Purpose
· To provide trainers with a flexible consultation format appropriate for client's initial and follow-up consultations.
· To introduce skills and techniques for increasing client motivation and confidence for engaging in regular exercise.
· To prepare trainers to use Motivational Interviewing methods to promote exercise adherence, client retention and client referral.
· To introduce the philosophy and principles of Motivational Interviewing.
· To examine factors associated with motivation to change exercise behaviour.
· To introduce using this approach the other "health" behaviours (e.g. smoking, "over-eating" etc)

Participants
Participants are expected to be qualified instructors and trainers who are actively involved in one to one work with clients.

Contents
The training will prepare participants to conduct effective brief motivational interviewing by providing the theory and understanding of motivational interviewing along with extensive supervised practice.
Topics covered will include:
· Exercise adherence: an update
· Establishing rapport
· Listening with empathy
· Understanding ambivalence
· Building motivation for change
· Building confidence for change
· Strengthening commitment to change
· Developing a plan for change
Teaching will involve a range of techniques but will mainly be experiential. Simulated exercises will involve demonstrations and role-play.

The American College of Sports Medicine's Professional Education Committee certifies that this Continuing Education offering meets the criteria for 14.5 credit hours of ACSM Continuing Education Credit. This programme has been reviewed for educational content and has been endorsed by the ACSM. This does not reflect endorsement of the sponsoring organisation, certifications, or products.

Certification
Certificates of attendance will be presented to each participant who attends the entire workshop and fulfils the necessary requirements.
