ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM EP-C)

Quick Overview

The ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM EP-C) is a health fitness professional with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in exercise science. The individual performs pre-participation health screenings, conducts physical fitness assessments, interprets results, develops exercise prescriptions, and applies behavioural and motivational strategies to apparently healthy individuals and individuals with medically controlled diseases and health conditions to support clients in adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviours. Academic preparation for an EP-C also includes fitness management, administration, and supervision.

For international based graduate candidates who don't wish to work in the UK and so don't need to take the UK Level 3 Personal Trainer, the ACSM EP-C is considered the world-wide Gold Standard in Special Populations Personal Training qualifications.

If you are not sure which qualification is the right one for you, please call Alison Hall on 0208 568 5336 or 07799 621 456, text for a call back or email us.

Details

The ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM EP-C) is a health fitness professional with a minimum of a bachelor's degree in exercise science. The individual performs pre-participation health screenings, conducts physical fitness assessments, interprets results, develops exercise prescriptions, and applies behavioural and motivational strategies to apparently healthy individuals and individuals with medically controlled diseases and health conditions to support clients in adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviours. Academic preparation for an EP-C also includes fitness management, administration, and supervision.

Individuals with this certification are typically employed or self-employed in commercial, community, studio, corporate, university, and hospital settings. They take personal training to an advanced level by working with individuals with medically controlled diseases, and have mastered the necessary skills to perform pre-exercise health risk assessments and conduct physical fitness assessments. They may also focus on other health tasks to support clients in adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviours.

This course is for university graduate candidates who:

-        Are UK and internationally based and looking for ACSM credentials to enhance their degree.

-        Are UK-based and already Level 3 Personal Trainer qualified and want a higher level of personal trainer knowledge and international recognised qualification.

-        Are looking to work internationally as a personal trainer and either have or do not have the Level 3 Personal Trainer already.

ACSM EP-C course begins with home study and an optional live online guided learning programme so candidates can begin as soon as is applicable. The assessment requires one attendance date at an exam centre for the final 3 hour computer-based assessment. Assessment centres are located throughout the UK (and the world) and are open Monday-Saturday (and some Sundays) in most locations.

Participants can progress through at a pace to suit the individual – intensive or slow and steady up to one year.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree* in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology or Kinesiology (see below for degree requirements). Candidates are eligible to take the exam in the last semester of their degree program.
  • Adult CPR/AED certification (with hands-on practical skills component)

*The academic eligibility requirement to take the EP-C exam is a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in exercise science, or equivalent (candidates are eligible to take the examination in the last semester of their degree program).
An equivalent major refers to the completion of a degree which includes, at minimum, the following:
A minimum of 21 semester or 28 quarter hours of exercise science courses that clearly identifies the following content:
• Exercise Physiology (this should be, at minimum, a 3.0 credit stand-alone course, or equivalent)
• Strength and Conditioning (course[s] should include principles of strength and conditioning, not simply a 1 credit hour activity course on strength training.)
• Applied Kinesiology or Biomechanics
• Anatomy and Physiology (this could be either a combined course or separate courses)
• Exercise Testing and Prescription (course[s] should include exercise testing and prescription for healthy populations and special considerations such as children, older adults, pregnancy, diseased populations, etc.)
• Special populations (course[s] should include pathophysiology on a range of conditions, including CVD, pulmonary, metabolic, older adults, pregnancy, etc.)
• Health Risk Appraisal (course[s] should include information on risk stratification or classification given a variety of health conditions.)

There is no petitioning process for non-exercise science based degree programs nor consideration made for past experience. You must meet the above criteria.

Please contact Alison Hall at HFI or call on 07799 621456 to find out if you are eligible for the ACSM EP-C.
